Anderson Entertainment nurtures the fandoms of Gerry Anderson’s classic TV shows, and produces products for its highly knowledgeable and detail-orientated fans. These include Elon Musk, who has named his planned base on the moon Moonbase Alpha, in homage to the moonbase in the show Space:1999. T-shirts are popular among the company’s products, and it commissioned Sharp Sharp to deliver a new approach, in order to keep the fans coming back for more.
As fans of the shows ourselves, we were excited to get to work with these classic brands. We worked closely with the Anderson Entertainment team to determine which themes and vehicles are most popular with fans.
Once these had been selected, then we developed a range of design themes which drew on current trends. We were careful to be faithful to the vehicles from the original shows, and did our research in order to keep the fans happy.
With the shows being over 50 years old, the quality of assets was varied, and while some elements had already been recreated for other products, some careful retouching was needed on other images to bring them up to modern artwork standards.
Sharp Sharp’s director Steve McInerny and our fashion design associate Melanie Williams shared the design duties, which made for a diverse selection of design ideas.
The first batch of designs, for Thunderbirds, sold out and so we’ve since been commissioned to design shirts for Space:1999, UFO and Captain Scarlet. Here's what Tim Collins of Anderson Entertainment has to say about the process and the results:
“We’re very happy with the T shirt designs from Sharp Sharp. A real change from some of the more conventional designs we offer on the Gerry Anderson store.”
We look forward to continuing this series, stay tuned for the next exciting instalment!
